Sunday Afternoons
“Sometimes, the moments that stay with us the longest are the simplest ones.”
- By Dennis Easters
Sunday afternoons have always been especially memorable.
After a big dinner, everything would quiet down. Everyone would slip into a short catnap—a gentle pause to rest our eyes after a meal that was larger than usual and lingered over longer.
The extra slice of pie had to settle in.
Then, as the heat of the day began to ease, something would unfold—never planned, just understood.
We’d grab our cane poles and head down to Jimmy Creek to see if the fish were biting… or wander through the orange grove, searching for birds’ nests.
Today, Atenas still holds onto much of that same rhythm.
A lazy afternoon in the park.
A picnic at Las Minas Waterfalls.
A quiet drive through the countryside with nowhere in particular to be.
Mama and her catfish.
It’s a reminder that life doesn’t need much to be fulfilling. Sometimes, the moments that stay with us the longest are the simplest ones: a quiet afternoon, a fishing pole, and a little bit of luck.
Mama’s catch, Jimmy Creek—where the afternoons seemed to last forever.
